The Elitebook had an Intel card fitted. I therefore bought a “V4.0 Bluetooth Dual Band 867M AC NGFF Wireless Card BCM94352Z For DELL DW1560” from Hong Kong off eBay. A lot of these cards are listed and they all tend to say they won’t work on an HP or Lenovo but that’s actually wrong. However it was Windows that was the biggest pain.
So having got wifi and bluetooth working on all three OS’s I thought I’d document it. Hopefully it might save others re-inventing the wheel.
macOS Sierra (easy)
Followed RehabMan’s FAQ here https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/faq-read-first-laptop-frequent-questions.164990/ and the info at GitHub here https://github.com/RehabMan/OS-X-BrcmPatchRAM. Used KextWizard to install FakePCIID.kext, FakePCIID_Broadcom_WiFi.kext, BrcmPatchRAM2.kext and BrcmFirmwareRepo.kext. Also used the hot patch method https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-hp-probook-elitebook-zbook-using-clover-uefi-hotpatch-10-11.189416/ to make sure everything was up to date. Result working bluetooth and wifi.
Linux Mint (very easy)
Needs alternate wifi to start with - USB dongle in my case. Driver Manager identified it, connected to repositories, installed 'Version 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.1', and wifi and bluetooth just worked. Why can't everything be that easy? It's offering a firmware update but, on the basis of 'if it ain't bust don't fix it”, I haven't gone that route. It sees it as a BCM4352 802.11ac adapter.
Windows 7 (total pain)
WiFi setup was reasonably easy using a Lenovo package w1wlg06us17_7 http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/thinkcentre-m-series-desktops/thinkcentre-m82/2697/downloads/ds038184 although oddly Windows update then offered a Dell update for a DW-1560. There are other driver packages out there from Dell etc but this was the only one which worked on my 820 G2.
Bluetooth was much more of a pain but I eventually found a package 'broadcom_bluetooth_12_0_0_9980.zip' http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/downloads/ds031759. This wouldn't install - said 'incompatible version of Windows' as it's for Windows 8 - but using the device manager to browse for the .inf file in the Win64 folder of the .zip worked. The file is 'bcbtums-win8x64-brcm.inf'.
It ends up under Bluetooth Radios in device manager calling itself ALPS-UGPZ9-BCM2046. Where did that number come from? Also has Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator installed.
So these cards do work on an HP machine despite what they say on eBay and there is no taping of connectors required. I hope that might be helpful to someone.
And …
Dear RehabMan - I think the hot patch method is brilliant and you should be awarded an Oscar at the very least. But what would make it even better would be a way to add specific bits to the config.plist automatically each time. I see they must be assembled in part from the config_parts folder. Would it be possible to put into that folder the SMBIOS key and also possibly the BOOT key for automatic inclusion? Perhaps that’s not possible but if it were it would be even more wonderful!!! Thank you.
